Course Description

Who will benefit from taking this subject: For all students, as communication is an essential lifelong skill, as well as because Level 1 Literacy is a basic qualification requirement and every English Achievement Standard counts toward Literacy. English gives students access to the understanding, knowledge and skills they need to be effective oral, written and visual communicators who are able to think critically and in depth. Content and skills Success in English is fundamental to success across the curriculum. By understanding how language works, students are equipped to make appropriate language choices, apply them and develop the key competencies in a diverse range of Level 1 contexts. Through oral, written and visual texts, students learn to deconstruct and critically interrogate texts in order to understand the power of language; then apply it to a variety of purposes at Level 1. Students will be assessed through Achievement Standards that are marked 'internally' by teachers, as well as having the opportunity to work toward NZQA Level 1 ?external? exams.
